Sexplanations for You!

Rakisha, Branch Manager/Kings Bay

There is so much information about sex, but there aren’t many clear answers.  Is gender and virginity really a social construct? Does sexuality exist on a spectrum? Am I normal? Jokes about kinks or accusations of grooming and sexualization are all over social media, and most of these comments are by folks who neither have the experience nor the knowledge of what those terms mean. The LGBTQIA+acronym seems to grow longer by the day while people are declaring themselves ethically non-monogamous and polyamorous before they’ve even had their first kiss.

How does one cut through the misinformation and get a straight (no pun intended) answer? Alex Liu, a health reporter, decides to undertake this challenge. Alex goes on a journey to find the shame-free, sex education that he was denied as teen in the comedic documentary A Sexplanation.

On Valentine’s Day, some of your most awkward questions can be answered at the Central Library. Older teens and young adults, ages 16 and up, are invited to a free screening of the movie A Sexplanation on February 14th at 3:30 pm. Teens, ages 13 and up, will be able to meet with sexual wellness and mental health organizations during our first Teen Sexual Wellness and Mental Health Fair. Organizations will be available from 3-6 pm in the main lobby with information and giveaways.

After the movie screening and the health fair, there will be a community, quilting circle. Teens and adults of all skill levels can join the LGBTQuilt circle. It is an inclusive, quilting program where all are welcomed to relax, decompress and create in a safe space.

Teens, get reliable and researched answers to your Puberty and Sex Ed questions. Email us at bklynfuture@bklynlibrary.org and expect an answer within two weeks. Excerpts of questions may be used anonymously in future Bklyn Future posts.
