Borough Park Library will soon undergo a comprehensive renovation to modernize its 70-year-old building and transform its public space.
The renovation will update every level of the library with new mechanical, electrical, and safety systems, fully ADA-compliant restrooms, and an upgraded elevator. A redesigned façade, new roof, and improved lighting will make the building brighter and more welcoming. Inside, new layouts across all three floors will create dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults, while the basement community room will be upgraded to better serve the neighborhood. Outside, a newly landscaped reading garden with seating will provide a fresh space for programs and relaxation.
Highlights of the renovation include:
- Enhanced public space across all three floors
- A redesigned façade reflecting the different functions of the library
- Dedicated, seperate teen and children’s spaces, including enclosed toddler and program areas, arts & crafts room, stroller parking, and a new lactation room
- Upgraded community room and additional meeting rooms of varying sizes
- Adult reading and computer areas with laptop access
- New ADA-compliant restrooms on every level and an upgraded elevator
- Modernized heating, cooling, electrical, and safety systems
- Landscaped reading garden with outdoor seating
Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
During construction, library staff will maintain a presence in the neighborhood by partnering with local organizations to host programs and activities.
The renovation is expected to cost $29 million and is funded through City capital funds allocated by the Mayor and the New York City Council.
NYC’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) will manage this project and LEVENBETTS is leading the design team for this renovation.
