kids arts and crafts Center for Brooklyn History Events for Youth and Family kids storytime

Celebrate the magic of creativity with author-illustrator Eric Velasquez in a family program inspired by his beloved book, Grandma’s Records!

We’ll begin with a special storytime reading, inviting children and parents to experience Eric’s vibrant world, where music and art bring generations together. Grandma’s Records is a tribute to the power of artistic expression—how music, memories, and family stories inspire us to create. After storytime, discover the Center for Brooklyn History’s unique collections and archives, connecting Eric’s journey as an artist to Brooklyn’s rich cultural history. Learn about Eric’s creative process and how he turned childhood memories into award-winning art.

Then, let your imagination soar in a hands-on art workshop! Inspired by the book, families will design their own record covers or musical memory collages, using a variety of materials. Each participant will take home their unique creation—a personal work of art that celebrates family, music, and creativity.

Copies of "Grandma's Records by Eric Velasquez" will be available for purchase at the event, and Eric will personally sign all purchased books.

  • Appropriate for children ages 5-10.
  • Parents welcome and encouraged to participate.
