CBH Family Program: Brooklyn Stories & Art with Author-Illustrator Nat Cardozo
Join author-illustrator Nat Cardozo for a special storytime reading of Origin: An illuminating look at Indigenous peoples and their connection to the natural world!
Embark on a journey across continents as Nat shares stunning portraits and stories of Indigenous children and their communities, inviting families to imagine themselves as explorers discovering new ways of living in harmony with the earth. Inspired by the book’s themes of transformation and adventure, we’ll dive into the Center for Brooklyn History’s special collections, uncovering real-life treasures and stories that connect us to the past. Nat will share insights into the creative process behind Origin, revealing how art and research brought these vibrant cultures to life.
Then, families will take part in a hands-on art activity: creating a self-portrait using a mirror, either individually or shared as a group. Once the portraits are complete, participants will use their drawings to “introduce” themselves to one of the children featured in the book, imagining what kinds of landscapes and stories live within them. Nat will share tips and tricks to improve drawing skills and spark ideas for creative expression.
Copies of "Origin" by Nat Cardozo" will be available for purchase at the event, and Nat will personally sign all purchased books.
