Today's Photo of the Week looks at a boy stopping to salute an American flag during an Armistice Day event, presumably at Borough Hall. Armistice Day was first observed on November 11, 1919, one year after the end of World War I. President Wilson honored this historic day with a stirring speech, a portion of which can be read here:
"To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations."
On June 1, 1954 a congressional amendment changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all the men and women who have served the United States.
