Sing Your Freakin' Heart Out!

Sing Your Freakin' Heart Out

In the spring of 2022, my group of K-pop-loving friends taught me about the slew of karaoke rooms in mid-Manhattan near Macy’s Herald Square.  Soon we were taking monthly pilgrimages to KoreaTown, colloquially known as K-Town, to storm our favorite karaoke spot. Armed with beverages, fried chicken, and unchecked volume, we would spend hours belting out Broadway showtunes, bad girl anthems, raunchy rap songs, and the requisite BTS hits. We would leave with our moods lighter and our friendship bonds tighter. It was definitely better than singing into a hairbrush while dancing around my living room.

American Idol and Rock Band was the staple of every Teen Librarians video game starter pack in 2007 before PlayStation 2 was replaced by PS4s, Xboxes, and every single Nintendo system from the Wii to the Switch. Over the years, karaoke fell out of favor for games like Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Just Dance and NBA Live. Those games bring in a lively and regular audience, but I felt it was time to take it back to the old school with some good ol’ karaoke fun.

Imagine the fun of singing in a public library and not being kicked out for being disorderly? Think about grabbing the mic and singing about stealing someone’s girlfriend in the style of Dove Cameron? Karaoke at the Central Branch is one of the few times and places where you will be cheered for your off-key singing and encouraged to hit high notes like Mariah Carey.

Live your superstar dreams on Tuesday by attending the Youth Wing’s Karaoke Party at Teen Tech Time in the Information Commons Lab on Tuesday, January 17th from 4 pm to 5 pm.

Join us for a Teen Karaoke Party! Bring a friend, grab a mic, and rock the stage with an afternoon of karaoke fun! Register with your favorite song instead of your name on our website. Click here! You can also visit Sing King Karaoke's YouTube channel for song ideas.  Masks are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED for this program. Disposable mic covers will be supplied, or you may bring your own wireless mic.
